Why your smart home must work without internet

Many systems on the market route every button press through a server abroad and back into the same room. They work well — until the connection drops, the vendor changes policy, or the service shuts down.

A thirty-second test

• Disconnect the internet at the router.
• Press a switch on the wall: it must respond immediately.
• Run a scene from the panel: it must work.
• Open the door with a fingerprint: it must open and log the entry.

Only one thing may stop when the internet does: access from outside the house. Inside it, everything must run locally.

What that means in practice

It means a local controller inside the house holding all the logic, and protocols that need no distant middleman. Slightly higher cost at the start, far lower over five years.

The internet is for remote access, not for turning on a light.
