Lighting first: why we always start with scenes
If you have budget for one system only, make it lighting. Nothing else changes how a house feels this much for this cost.

Lighting is the one system everyone in the house uses, several times a day, without exception. It is also the cheapest system to move from on/off to scene.
A scene is not a button
A traditional switch asks: which circuit? A scene asks: which moment? The first requires you to know your wiring; the second requires you to know your habits.
- Welcome: side lights at 70%, ceiling at 30%, corridor lit.
- Dinner: the dining table only, everything else dimmed.
- Close: everything off except the service corridor.
The rule of six
Never exceed six scenes per space. Beyond that they are not remembered, what is not remembered is not used, and what is not used is cost without return.
